Message from the Dean
On April 1st, 2008, we founded the first graduate school of biomedical engineering in Japan. Biomedical engineering is a new multidisciplinary field of education and research that combines engineering and biomedicine and is based on physics, chemistry, and biology. One of the primary mission objectives of the new graduate school is to contribute to human social welfare by defining the enigmatic mechanisms of life using engineering expertise, knowledge, and technology. We founded the school in accordance with a criterion set by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology to develop the field that was called as an interdisciplinary one into a new and large disciplinary field of biomedical engineering.
Over 80 years ago at Tohoku University, collaboration between the engineering and medical departments yielded the invention of the electric stethoscope. This is well known as a pioneering work of biomedical engineering in Japan, and much other collaborative work between the engineering and medical departments has since been performed at Tohoku University. The birth of the new graduate school was based on the traditional foundation of education and research established by our forward-thinking predecessors. The new school was founded with the generous support of university professors and staff, including the president. I am greatly appreciative to them for their assistance.
The massive earthquakes have occurred in east Japan on March 11th, 2011.We bring together the wisdom of the university and overcome the unprecedented hardships. We also contribute to reconstruction of Japan with high ideals and a zest for education and research in biomedical engineering.
We expect the students entering our new graduate school and exploring this new frontier to be leaders with high ideals and a zest for education and research in biomedical engineering.
