Mitochondrial preemptive medicine, MOONSHOT research & development program

  • Professor Takaaki Abe Professor Takaaki Abe

The Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED) leads a moonshot initiative to prevent and overcome major diseases by 2040 and to build a sustainable, long-term healthcare system. This system enables people to enjoy life without health concerns until age 100. The initiative pursues three goals: making prevention a natural part of daily life, creating a global medical network for accessible care, and building an inclusive society that eliminates health disparities and improves quality of life.
Professor Takaaki Abe of Tohoku University Graduate School of Biomedical Engineering comprehensively analyzes the "mitochondria-gut microbiota axis," where mitochondria and gut bacteria collaborate to control the host. By clarifying these mechanisms, Professor Abe is developing non-invasive diagnostics and novel therapeutic drugs that may transform how mitochondrial dysfunction is detected and treated.
Understanding the mitochondria-gut microbiota axis could significantly advance efforts to diagnose diseases earlier and improve health outcomes. The initiative aims to achieve healthy longevity by 2040 through early detection, intervention, and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction.
